A large William IV flame mahogany breakfront library bookcase, dating to circa 1830–1837, with four glazed upper doors above panelled cupboard doors.
The upper section is arranged as four glazed cupboards, each fitted with three adjustable shelves. The glazed doors have arched astragals, while the flame mahogany gives the piece a particularly attractive figured appearance.
The lower section is fitted with panelled cupboard doors and rounded wooden handles. The central cupboard contains two shelves, while each of the two side cupboards contains one shelf, providing substantial storage below the display sections.
The bookcase is designed to dismantle into a number of sections for movement and installation. The upper cupboards and lower cupboard sections separate individually, while the top cornice lifts away and slots into position. The base remains as one complete section, and the individual sections are secured together with screws when assembled.
A practical and substantial piece of English library furniture, well suited to a large book collection and particularly at home in a traditional library, study or drawing room.
