A mid-Victorian pollard oak sideboard, with a raised back incorporating a top shelf and subtly carved roundels above the main body.
The lower section is fitted with panelled cupboard doors opening to reveal useful storage, together with fitted drawers. The piece is well proportioned and practical, while the pollard oak gives it a particularly distinctive appearance.
Pollard oak is oak cut from trees that had been repeatedly pollarded, a traditional method of cutting back the upper branches so that new growth would form. This process could create highly figured and irregular grain patterns within the timber, producing the distinctive swirling and mottled appearance for which pollard oak is known. Because of its decorative figuring, it was especially valued for veneers and fine furniture during the 19th century.
The sideboard shows the characteristic rich figuring of pollard oak throughout, giving the surfaces considerable visual interest without the need for heavy additional decoration.
A practical and decorative piece of Victorian dining-room furniture, suitable for a dining room, hallway or large living space, with generous storage and a useful display surface above.
