A French Louis XV style kingwood & floral marquetry petite commode, dating from the late 19th century, circa 1890.
The quarter-veneered and crossbanded top is enclosed by a pierced brass gallery and centred with a floral marquetry panel. Below are three long drawers, each decorated with further floral marquetry and opening by key. The commode retains its original key.
Raised on elegant cabriole legs, the commode displays the graceful proportions and decorative qualities associated with the Louis XV style.
The drawers are fitted with Vachette Frères locks. Founded in 1864 in Troyes and renamed Vachette Frères in 1865, the firm became one of France’s leading lock manufacturers during the late 19th century. Their locks are commonly found on quality French furniture of the Belle Époque period (1871–1914).
