An antique Victorian rectangular gilt overmantel wall mirror by S. T. Townshend, carver, gilder, and looking-glass manufacturer of Norwich. The mirror retains part of its original trade label to the reverse, reading:
S. T. Townshend, Carver, Gilder and Frame Manufacturer, 18 Charing Cross, although the label is partially missing.
The mirror has a traditional Victorian overmantel form, with a rectangular plate set within a gilt frame. The lower corners are carved with decorative detail, adding to the character of the frame. The mirror is fitted with mounting brackets to each side, allowing it to be securely fixed to the wall.
Suitable for placement above a fireplace, console, or as a wall mirror in a hallway or reception room.
About the Maker — S. T. Townshend
Samuel Thomas Townshend was a Norwich-based carver, gilder, and looking-glass manufacturer, active from the mid-19th century. He continued the business established by his father, Samuel Townshend, whose workshop operated from the 1820s. Trade directories record S. T. Townshend at Charing Cross, Norwich, from 1854 until the late 19th century, producing mirrors, picture frames, and carved gilt work. Members of the Townshend family continued the business into the early 20th century.
