An elegant antique late Georgian Pembroke side table, circa 1820, in the Sheraton manner, crafted in mahogany and later enhanced with finely executed hand painted decoration. The piece bears the stamp of Edwards & Roberts, one of London’s most eminent cabinetmakers of the Victorian period, celebrated for their high-quality reproductions and embellishments in the Adam, Sheraton and Hepplewhite styles.
The rectangular top, with hinged drop-leaves, is centred by a finely painted scene depicting two young children, framed by delicate floral sprays which extend across the surface. The decoration continues with floral motifs to the drawer front and down each tapering leg, providing a graceful contrast to the warmth of the mahogany.
The table is fitted with a single frieze drawer, mounted with brass pulls inset with floral roundels, and raised on square tapering supports terminating in brass castors. The painted embellishments, likely added in the Victorian period under the direction of Edwards & Roberts, lend the piece a distinctive decorative appeal while remaining true to the neoclassical spirit of Sheraton design.
A refined and versatile example, combining the craftsmanship of the late Georgian period with the decorative sensibility of the Victorian revival.
